This house was designed to address the client's brief and the challenging tapering site conditions at the back of the plot. One of the client's requirements was to include a half basketball court within the property, adding to the complexity of the design due to the limited land size and planning restrictions. These challenges were turned into design opportunities by incorporating the basketball court into the house itself, creating a curvilinear double brick wall that serves as a distinctive feature. This wall forms the entrance path to the house and continues as an internal element.
Utilizing the corner site, the garage and services were placed on the opposite side of the plot to maintain an unobstructed, dramatic entrance flanked by crafted brick walls and lush planters. Curved forms are a recurring theme throughout the house, evident in the staircase design, double-height openings, kitchen island, and bathrooms. Contemporary materials paired with mid-century colored timber create a striking contrast while maintaining a warm, homely atmosphere. Natural stone with green hues is used in the kitchen and bathrooms to add accents to the space.
The house's design prioritizes multifunctional spaces in response to the limited space available. For example, the cinema can be quickly transformed into a music room or a study area for children. Despite the space constraints, the open-plan design, double-height voids, extensive north-facing windows, and convertible spaces make the house feel spacious.
